TI UCC28950 Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Controller Inside Delta 2000 W Platinum Server PSU

A teardown of Delta's DPS-2000AB-2 G, a 2000 W 80 PLUS Platinum server power supply, shows the secondary DC-DC stage controlled by a Texas Instruments UCC28950 phase-shifted full-bridge controller. The unit accepts 100–127 V and 200–240 V AC as well as 240 V DC input; at 220–240 V AC or 240 V DC it delivers 12 V at up to 162 A, or 1968 W, on the main rail plus a 12 V/3 A standby output.
The conversion chain is an active PFC front end, a phase-shifted full bridge and synchronous rectification, built into a long metal enclosure with active air cooling and a gold-finger card-edge connector for the server chassis. Inside, a separate elongated control daughterboard sits along the bottom of the PCBA, carrying the PFC and phase-shifted full-bridge control circuitry.
The UCC28950 comes in TSSOP-24 and supports a programmable switching frequency up to 1 MHz, enhanced zero-voltage switching, direct synchronous-rectification control and several voltage and current control modes. In this design it generates the gate signals and switching sequence for the primary bridge, regulating output by shifting the phase relationship between the two bridge legs and thereby the energy transferred through the transformer.
Enhanced ZVS lets the bridge turn on its MOSFETs at zero drain-source voltage using the resonant inductor energy and device parasitic capacitance, cutting turn-on overlap losses and device heating. The controller also provides burst mode, discontinuous conduction mode and dynamic synchronous-rectification control to hold light-load efficiency, which matters for a supply rated near 2 kW that must stay efficient across a wide load range.
