Texas Instruments' PMP41163 reference design targets 65W USB-C PD adapters with a flat, height-constrained AC-DC architecture. The measured board is 72.31 x 39.73 x 9.66 mm and about 42.4 g, holding total height under 10 mm. Input range is 90-264Vac, and the output supports 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A and 20V/3.25A for 65W maximum. The primary AC-DC stage is TI's UCG28826, a co-packaged GaN flyback converter combining the flyback controller with GaN power devices; an IP2723 handles USB PD protocol control on the secondary side, alongside a synchronous rectifier controller.
UCG28826 supports VCC self-bias, so no auxiliary winding or VCC rectifier is needed, which simplifies the planar transformer layout. It runs quasi-resonant with valley switching and integrates high-voltage startup, current sensing, X-capacitor discharge, brownout detection and OTP, OVP, SCP, OCP and OPP protection. The main transformer is an EDI2721 PCB planar part with a 7:1 turns ratio. Input filtering uses a 33µH common-mode choke and a 100nF X capacitor, and two 47µF/400V electrolytics are mounted horizontally to save height. Switching frequency is about 180 kHz at high line and full load, and a PCB slot strengthens primary-to-secondary isolation.
At 20V/3.25A (65W), full-load efficiency measures 92.41% on 90Vac and 93.82% on 230Vac, about 4.28W of loss; on 115Vac it is 90.74% at 5V, 92.76% at 9V, 93.55% at 15V and 93.51% at 20V. No-load draw is 47mW, 49mW, 61mW and 69mW across 90/115/230/264Vac, within DoE Level VI and CoC V5 Tier 2. Open-frame full-load thermals put the rectifier bridge at 85.3°C and UCG28826 at 75.8°C on 90Vac; on 230Vac UCG28826 falls to 58.6°C while the planar transformer and the secondary rectification stage reach 82.2°C and 87.3°C. Conducted EMI stays within EN55032 limits, short-circuit protection recovers automatically, and the latched over-voltage point is about 25.6V.
